O Grupo de Engenharia de Software Experimental da linha de Engenharia de Software do PESC, convida para palestra internacional no dia 08/09/2009 (terça-feira), às 10:00 hrs, na sala H-324b (anfiteatro), na COPPE/UFRJ, a ser apresentada pelo Dr. Hakan Erdogmus, editor chefe da IEEE Software, que estará nos visitando neste dia.

Titulo:
Test-Driven Development: Overview and Empirical Results

Test-Driven Development is a growing practice originally popularized by Extreme Programming in the early 2000s. It is somewhat controversial because it incurs a large short-term overhead and it appears to blur the traditional separation between programming and testing and between development and quality assurance. While many developers who try TDD embrace it, others find it difficult to apply, counter-intuitive, intrusive, or plain burdensome. This talk will provide an overview of TDD, explain its underlying dynamics, and dispel some common myths about TDD. It will discuss the levels of TDD's application, common variations of TDD, and barriers to TDD's widespread adoption. Finally, the talk will summarize the empirical evidence regarding TDD's effectiveness.

Biography:
Dr. Hakan Erdogmus is the Editor in Chief of IEEE Software. He is a software engineering researcher and consultant based in Ottawa, Canada, and owner of Kalemun Research Inc. Previously he was as a senior research officer in the Software Engineering Group of the Canadian National Research Council's Institute for Information Technology, where he worked from 1995 to 2009. His research focuses on software economics, software process, and agile software development. Hakan teaches graduate courses on software engineering economics at the University of Calgary, where he is an adjunct professor in the Computer Science Department. He is the 2003 recipient of the Eugene L. Grant Award given by the Engineering Economy division of the American Society for Engineering Education. He co-edited two books, Value-Based Software Engineering and Advances in Software Engineering, both published by Springer. Hakan holds an MSc degree in Computer Science from McGill University (1989) and a PhD in Telecommunications from INRS, Université du Québec (1994).
