Evento: 'Palestras: Dr. C. Diot (Technicolor) e Profa. Renata Teixeira (INRIA)'

Eventos PESC (Palestras, Seminários, etc.)
Palestras, Seminários, etc. do PESC/COPPE/UFRJ.
Data: Tuesday, October 21, 2014 At 10:00
Duração: 2 Horas

Nesta terça-feira receberemos a visita de dois ilustres pesquisadores:
*** Dr. Christophe Diot Chief Scientist da Technicolor (e ACM Fellow)
*** Profa Renata Teixeira do INRIA Paris-Rocquencourt

Title: Troubleshooting home networks from Home Gateways

Abstract:
NSPs #1 problem is home network troubleshooting, with WiFi related questions causing a large majority of the complains. Together with a major European NSP, Technicolor, who is providing home gateways (HGWs) to many broadband and cable service providers worldwide, has launched a new initiative to diagnose home network problems from the operational HGW.

The talk will describe this effort (platform, and early observations) and show how we manage to (1) track performance problem in home networks and (2) infer personal information from purely technical data such as traffic counters, IP addresses, ARP tables.

Speaker bio:
Christophe Diot received a Ph.D. degree in Computer Science from INP Grenoble in 1991. With INRIA Sophia-Antipolis (Oct 93-Sept 98), Diot pioneered diffserv, single source multicast, and peer-to-peer online games. At Sprint (Oct 98-Apr 03), he pioneered Internet measurements. Diot was with Intel Research from May 03 to Sept 05, and then joined Thomson where he started two research labs: Paris in 2006 and Palo Alto in 2011. Diot's research activities now focus on content delivery architectures and personalization. Diot has around 40 patents and more than 300 publications in major conferences and journals. Thomson became Technicolor in January 10. Diot is currently Chief Scientist at Technicolor. He is an ACM fellow.

With the availability of cheap broadband connectivity, Internet access from the home has become a ubiquity. Typical home communication and entertainment services such as telephony, television, and gaming are converging to operate over IP and users constantly access Internet services and applications from home. Modern households host a multitude of networked devices, ranging from personal devices such as laptops and smartphones to printers and media centers. These devices connect among themselves and to the Internet via a local-area network—a home network— that has become an important part of the “Internet experience”, and consequently, has started to attract the interest of the network monitoring community. Our long-term goal is to assist users with concrete indicators of the causes of potential problems and— ideally—ways to fix them. In this talk, I’ll present our research in home network diagnosis.

Bio:
Renata Teixeira received the Ph.D. degree in computer science from the University of California, San Diego, in 2005. During her Ph.D. studies, she worked on Internet routing at the AT&T Research. She was a researcher with the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS) at LIP6, UPMC Sorbonne Universites, Paris, France from 2006 to 2013. She joined Inria Paris-Rocquencourt as senior researcher in October 2013. She was a visiting scholar at UC Berkeyley/ICSI in 2011. Her research interests are in measurement, analysis, and management of data networks. She has authored more than 50 papers in this area. Renata is vice-chair of ACM SIGCOMM. She serves in the editorial board of the IEEE/ACM Transactions on Networking and of the ACM SIGCOMM Computer Communication Review. She is also a member of the steering committee of the ACM Internet Measurement Conference and has been active in the program committees of ACM SIGCOMM, ACM IMC, PAM, IEEE INFOCOM, among others.
